Peter Karpen is managing director and head of hedge fund strategies at Samoset Capital Group.[1] He was also director of business development for Martello Investment Management, a specialist investment firm concentrating on alternative investment managers that employ tactical trading strategies in the global currency, fixed income, commodity and equity markets.[2] He is a former chairman of the Futures Industry Association and has been involved in the futures and options business throughout his career.[3]
In 2006, Karpen was inducted into the Futures Industry Association's Futures Hall of Fame, which was established in 2005 to commemorate outstanding contributions to the global futures and options community.[4]
Biography[edit]
Karpen was chairman of the Futures Industry Association in 1994 and 1995. He succeeded Cargill executive Hal Hansen as FIA Chairman.[5] At the time he was director of futures and options at Credit Suisse First Boston. While he was FIA Chairman, he was deeply involved in the international response to the Barings crisis and brought together a task force of more than 60 participants from 17 jurisdictions to draft a comprehensive set of recommendations for end-users, intermediaries, exchanges and clearinghouses.
He later joined John W. Henry & Co. as a managing director. He was also chief investment officer of Diversified Investment Management, and director of marketing and investor relations for Archetype Risk Advisors.[6]
Karpen was a public director at the New York Board of Trade since 1998 and also has participated in a number of industry committees, including the Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s Financial Advisory Committee and Regulatory Coordinating Committee.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Boston University and an MBA from Boston College.
