He has been recognized as an influential figure in electronic trading and financial markets innovation. Background[edit]Granieri co-founded Jane Street in 2000 along with Tim Reynolds, Marc Gerstein and Michael Jenkins, and has played a central role in the firm’s rise to become one of the world’s largest and most technologically advanced proprietary trading companies. Jane Street is headquartered in New York City and operates globally, trading equities, ETFs, bonds, options, and digital assets on more than 200 venues in over 45 countries.[1] The firm is widely recognized for its quantitative approach, proprietary technology, and significant role in maintaining market liquidity, particularly in exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and electronic markets. Although Jane Street is well known within the industry, Granieri keeps a low profile. He is the only one of the firm’s original founders who is still there, yet he is not featured on the company’s website. Granieri has held various executive and board positions within Jane Street’s network of companies, including managing director at Jane Street Holding LLC, principal at Jane Street Financial Ltd., and director roles at Jane Street Europe Ltd., Jane Street International Trading Ltd., and JSCT Europe Ltd. He is also a director at Edgar Street Capital LLC, an investment firm based in New York. Granieri’s regulatory and industry credentials include registrations with multiple U.S. exchanges and self-regulatory organizations.[2] Granieri holds multiple FINRA qualifications including Securities Trader (approved 2016), General Securities Principal (approved 2016), and Registered Options Principal (approved 2023) across exchanges like MEMX LLC and MIAX Emerald.[3] He was instrumental in the recruitment of Sam Bankman-Fried, later known for his role in the cryptocurrency industry, during Bankman-Fried’s early career at Jane Street.[4] The firm's success has allowed Granieri to fund various projects and causes he supports. He helped build the Scarlet Pearl, a casino resort on the Gulf Coast in Mississippi, and he has donated to the Equal Justice Initiative and Institute for Justice. He was also a significant financial backer of Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley. South Sudan Coup Plot Incident[edit]In 2024, Granieri became the subject of media attention after it was revealed that he had transferred $7 million to Peter Ajak, a Harvard fellow and activist, who was later charged by U.S. federal prosecutors with conspiring to illegally export arms to South Sudan as part of an alleged coup plot.[5] Granieri, who has not been accused of wrongdoing by U.S. authorities, stated through his lawyer that he was deceived by Ajak, whom he believed was a human rights advocate.[6] His attorney emphasized Granieri’s history of supporting human rights initiatives and described him as a victim of fraud in this incident.[7] References[edit]
