Sam Tegel is the chief executive officer (CEO) of ElectronX, a proposed electricity derivatives exchange focused on providing trading products to manage price risk and volatility in the energy transition towards renewable sources. He assumed the role of CEO in 2023.

Background[edit]

Before joining ElectronX, Tegel had a career in electronic trading and finance. He previously worked at the high-speed trading firm Jump Trading, where he was head of liquidity strategy. He also worked for Caherciveen Partners as head of trading and for Sun Trading LLC as a trading team leader. He is the founder of Sage Capital Markets.

Tegel holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.

ElectronX[edit]

ElectronX is building a U.S.-regulated derivatives exchange to offer granular electricity derivatives contracts, allowing power market participants to hedge risk from the increasing adoption of intermittent renewable energy sources like wind and solar. The exchange aims to provide a modern financial infrastructure to support investment in clean energy development.

In June 2024, ElectronX announced a $15 million seed funding round led by venture capital firm Innovation Endeavors, with participation from DCVC, Amplo, BoxGroup, and Lightning Capital. The funding will support ElectronX's pursuit of regulatory approvals from the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to operate as a designated contract market and clearing organization.

Tegel has assembled a team of experienced advisors and regulatory board members from firms like FINRA, CME Group, Nodal Exchange, and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to oversee ElectronX's marketplace.

Under Tegel's leadership, ElectronX plans to offer fully collateralized and centrally cleared electricity derivatives contracts, providing risk management tools for energy generators, storage companies, large consumers, and households with renewable assets.[1]

Education[edit]

Tegel holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Northwestern University and studied computer science at the University of Chicago.
