Skew is a cryptocurrency data and trade execution platform for trading bitcoin and Ether derivatives products.[1]

Skew was founded in 2018 by Emmanuel Goh, Daniel Cullender, and Tim Noat.[2] On April 30, 2021 Coinbase announced that it is acquiring skew and that it will integrate the analytics platform into its Coinbase Prime offering targeted at institutional investors.[3]

In 2019, skew raised $2 million via a seed round of fundraising for its data platform skewAnalytics, which was led by Firstminute Capital. Other participants in the round include Seedcamp, Kima Ventures, Kleiner Perkins, and QCP Capital.[4]

In April 2020, skew raised another $5 million in a round led by Octopus Ventures, with participation from the Digital Currency Group, Firstminute Capital, and Seedcamp. This round was done in part to expand skew's engineering team, according to the company's CEO Emmanuel Goh. Goh said skew's goal is to become "like a Bloomberg for crypto - data meets trading." After the funding round, skew also launched skewTrading, a platform designed to help institutional investors connect to market makers across listed and OTC digital asset products, including digital asset derivatives and spot products.[5]

Products and Services[edit]

Skew offers two services through its trading platform, skewTrading, and its data analytics platform, skewAnalytics.

SkewTrading is a cryptocurrency trading platform that allows institutional traders to trade digital asset investment products tied to bitcoin and Ether. The platform does not hold client funds, relying instead on a clearing system. SkewTrading is regulated by the U.K. Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). According to Goh, the platform is tailored to suit institutional investors - providing analysis on things like trade flows and positioning rather than technical analyses, which he says is an "already well-covered area in crypto markets."[6][7]

SkewAnalytics is a digital asset market data platform. It displays data like open interest, futures and options volumes by cryptocurrency trading platform, and liquidations.[8][9]
