Transaction Network Services was founded in 1990 as a subsidiary of the privately held company TNS, Inc. The company's initial focus was on providing transaction routing services for automated teller machines (ATMs). As the company grew, it expanded into other areas of financial transaction processing and data communications.

In 1995, TNS was acquired by VeriFone, a leading provider of electronic payment systems. Under VeriFone's ownership, TNS continued to expand its product offerings and client base. In 2005, TNS was spun off as an independent company following VeriFone's acquisition by Hewlett-Packard.
