Visa, Inc. is a global payments company specializing in debit cards, credit cards and prepaid cards. On March 18, 2008, Visa became a publicly held company, raising $17.9 billion in an initial public offering, the largest ever in the United States.[1]

The precursor to Visa was launched by Bank of America in 1958 as the BankAmericard. After a period of growth, including its launch outside the U.S., BankAmericard changed its name to Visa in 1976. [2]
