The Climate Markets & Investment Association (CMIA), was established in October 2011, replacing the prior name, the Carbon Markets and Investors Association.

The new name was chosen to reflect "both the need and potential for the diversification of the role of the private sector in combating climate change," said director, Miles Austin. The new name also is in response to the shift away from legally binding climate treaties, as well as the failed efforts to create a federal US cap-and-trade scheme.

CMIA's membership accounts for an estimated 75 percent of the global carbon market, valued at $120 billion in 2010. [1]
