A Commodity Trading Advisor (CTA) is a category of investment advisor in the commodity futures industry. A CTA is compensated in some form for providing trading assistance to clients. Typically, a CTA will engage in either or both of two activities:

  • Actively making investment decisions on behalf of clients, placing trades for the benefit or loss of client accounts;
  • Issuing reports, recommendations or other specific advice to the public or clients as to the advisability of trading various futures-related instruments.
