James Overdahl is a partner at Delta Strategy Group (DSG), a DC based government affairs firm. He joined the firm in August 2013, and will lead efforts to provide advisory services on regulatory matters concerning the SEC, CFTC, swaps markets.[1]

Before joining DGS, Overdahl was a vice president at National Economic Research Associates (NERA), where he worked as an industry affiliate with NERA Consulting's securities and finance practice. He joined NERA from the Securities and Exchange Commission, where he was chief economist. Before that, he was chief economist at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) for five years.

In June of 2010, Overdahl was named spokesman for a new lobbying group, the Principal Traders Group (PTG), which the Futures Industry Association (FIA) formed to represent principal traders (i.e. independent proprietary trading firms that trade only on their own accounts).[2] His role as spokesman was not to represent the group as a lobbyist but to communicate with the media.[3]

In his positions at the SEC and CFTC, Overdahl testified before each Commission. He also testified before Congress on behalf of the SEC and CFTC, and provided staff support and briefings for members of the President's Working Group on Financial Markets.[4]

Prior to his government service, Overdahl was an in-house consultant for Strategic Petroleum Inc., on issues involving derivatives trading and asset management. He also taught economics and finance at the University of Texas, Georgetown University, and Johns Hopkins University.[5]

Dr. Overdahl has also served as a senior financial economist for the Risk Analysis Division of the US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.

  • Ph.D., Economics, Iowa State University (1984)
  • B.A., Economics, St. Olaf College (1980)[6]

Published Works[edit]

Overdahl has published extensively in leading economics and finance journals, including the Journal of Business, Journal of Law and Economics, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Futures Markets, Journal of Derivatives, and Journal of Alternative Investments, and has contributed chapters to books on finance and economics.

He also co-edited and co-authored, with Robert Kolb, four books, including Financial Derivatives: Pricing and Risk Management and Futures, Options, and Swaps.
