Harold Lavender is an attorney, entrepreneur, former exchange member and director and military veteran.[1]

Following active duty service in the United States Air Force as a commissioned officer, Lavender earned a law degree from the University of New Mexico and began a career in law.

However, he was encouraged by a fellow University of New Mexico graduate, Larry Berg, to come to Chicago and buy a membership at the Chicago Board of Trade.

Background[edit]

Lavender relocated to Chicago in 1976, took on considerable debt to buy his membership and spent thirty-four years as a member of the CBOT and a floor trader. He traded on both the agricultural floor and the financial floor.

He was elected to two terms as a director of the CBOT and two terms on the executive committee. Lavender regularly represented the exchange in various media outlets and traveled internationally to New York, Washington, D.C., Hong Kong, Europe, and Australia to represent the exchange.

Lavender also served as a guest lecturer for the Sloan School at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Upon return to New Mexico after his trading career was over, Lavender rejoined the law profession while he also taught classes on futures and finance at the University of New Mexico's Anderson School of Management.

He also became actively involved in the community in New Mexico and was appointed by he New Mexico Legislature to the New Mexico State Investment Council and served as chairman of the Investment Committee.[2][3][4]

Lavender also became involved in the University of New Mexico Alumni Association board of directors and served as president.

After retiring from the practice of law, Lavender joined CNM Ingenuity as director of business and finance development.[5]

Education[edit]

Lavender holds a bachelor of arts degree in English and American Studies from the University of New Mexico and a juris doctor degree from The University of New Mexico Law School.[6]

In 2024, Lavender was awarded the Erna S. Fergusson Award, which recognizes exceptional accomplishments and/or commitment or distinguished service to The University of New Mexico.
