Laura M. Cha Occupation Chairman Employer Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Location Hong Kong Laura M. Cha was named chairman of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX) in April of 2018, the first woman to hold that role at HKEX. She replaced Chow Chung Kong, who stepped down after the maximum allowed six years in the role. She is also an independent non-executive director at HSBC Holdings Plc and a non-official member of Hong Kong’s Executive Council, which advises the city’s head of government, according to her biography. Cha was previously chairman of Hong Kong’s Financial Services Development Council (FSDC), a government advisory body. She is the only woman to chair a Hang Seng Index member company Background In 2001, Cha was appointed vice chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission, the first non-mainland Chinese person to hold that role. In 1997, she became the first female deputy chair of Hong Kong’s securities regulator, the Securities and Futures Commission. As chairman of the Financial Services Development Council, Cha championed the introduction of dual-class shares in the city and was behind efforts to position Hong Kong as an offshore center for trading Chinese yuan.
