Oman began his career in accounting at Deloitte, Haskins and Sells in Des Moines. He joined Wells Fargo (then Dial Finance) in 1979 at Des Moines-based Wells Fargo Financial, Inc., where he held a variety of management positions.

In 1985, he joined Wells Fargo home mortgage and held a number of senior management positions until 1989 when he was named president and chief executive officer.

In 1997, Oman was promoted to group executive vice president of Wells Fargo & Co with responsibility for multiple business units, and in 2005 was promoted to senior executive vice president.

Oman holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls.
