Markit iTraxx CDS Indices are rules-based indices composed of the most liquid names in the European and Asian markets. The method of selection is designed to ensure that the indices are replicable and represent the most heavily traded part of the market. [1] They are monitored by the International Index Company (IIC).

It is also possible to trade Markit iTraxx tranches, options and standardized first-to-default baskets. More than 35 banks are licensed as Markit iTraxx market makers. They develop, market and trade products on the European, LevX and Asia Pacific index families.

The credit derivatives market that iTraxx provides allows parties to transfer the risk and return of underlying assets from one party to another without actually transferring the assets. [2]
