Melvyn Falis was a partner with the law firm of Gusrae, Kaplan, Bruno & Nusbaum, PLLC and a public director of NYMEX Holdings Inc. From 1977 to 1983, he was general counsel of NYMEX, and was a principal author of the NYMEX Heating Oil Futures contract.[1] He served on the NYMEX Board of Directors from 2001-2008.[2]

Falis passed away on March 17, 2013.


Falis' law practice included commodities law, securities law, employment and corporate law.[3] He was considered an authority on commodities regulation and also practiced in the area of employment law.[4]

He represented high net-worth individuals, partnerships and corporate entities in the financial services industry including, broker-dealers, account executives, FCMs, introducing brokers, investment advisors, commodity pool operators, floor brokers and traders.

Falis served as a public member of the board of directors of the former New York Futures Exchange, and served since 1999 as a public member of the board of directors of the Commodity Floor Brokers and Traders Association.

Before he served as NYMEX's general counsel, Falis was commodities and securities counsel for Prudential Securities. [5]

He also served as a guest lecturer at New York Law School and Chicago-Kent Law School, and was an editor of the Commodities Law Letter.[6]


Falis received a BA from City University of New York in 1961 and a law degree from Fordham University in 1964.[7]
