Morgan Stanley Wealth Management is the brokerage and asset management division of investment bank Morgan Stanley.[1] The company announced on September 25, 2012 that it would be changing its name from Morgan Stanley Smith Barney to Morgan Stanley Wealth Management. [2]


The company traces its roots to 1873, when Charles D. Barney founded the company that would eventually become Smith Barney.[3] Smith Barney would eventually become part of Travelers Group, which Sandy Weill merged with Citicorp in 1998 to form Citigroup, Inc..

In 2009, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney was created from a global merger of Citi Smith Barney and Morgan Stanley's wealth management business. [4]

In September 2012 the company changed its name to Morgan Stanley Wealth Management.

Products and Services

The firm provides the traditional functions of wealth management - financial planning, portfolio management, trust and advisory services, specifically for high net worth individuals.
