Preet Bharara is a former federal prosecutor who served as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 2009 to 2017. He previously served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for five years.

Bharara was mentioned in November 2020 as one of the top contenders to run the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission under the administration of President-elect Joe Biden. He was nominated to become the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York by President Obama and sworn in on August 13, 2009. He left that post in March 2017.[1]

Background[edit]

While serving as U.S. Attorney, Bharara was known for his investigations of insider trading on Wall Street. He became known nationally when he brought charges against the hedge fund SAC Capital Advisors in Federal District Court in Manhattan in 2012, a case that later resulted in the fund's closure after SAC agreed to plead guilty to five counts of insider trading violations in 2013.

Bharara is also a Distinguished Scholar in Residence at the New York University Law School and host of the podcast "Stay Tuned with Preet."

Education[edit]

He received his law degree in 1993 from from the Columbia University School of Law, where he was a member of the Columbia Law Review, and graduated from Harvard University in 1990 with an AB in Government.[2]
