In 2017, Mendes envisioned an innovation lab at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to provide a collaborative space for students and support the Illini Chabad's Deborah and Ira Cohen Innovation and Education Program. The Illini Chabad provides a gathering space for Jewish students of the University of Illinois, of which in 2017 there were approximately 4,000 on the Urbana campus. The CME Goldstick Tech Innovation Lab, established with funding from the Chicago Mercantile Exchange Foundation and the family of Phil and Beverly Goldstick featuring computers, presentation TV screens, and a printer, was designed to foster idea generation and collaboration.<ref>Business Welcomes Tech Innovation Lab at Illini Chabad.
