Gerald Group is a global independent and employee-owned metals trading company founded in 1962 in Connecticut, United States, as Gerald Metals by entrepreneur Gerald Lennard, and has evolved to become the world's largest independent metals merchant specializing in the sourcing, trading, financing, and logistics of non-ferrous, ferrous, and precious metals, concentrates, and raw materials across more than 40 countries with annual revenues exceeding $10 billion.[1][2] The company has maintained continuous profitability for 60+ years. It operates through a global network of trading hubs in London, Stamford, Shanghai, Geneva, Dubai, and other strategic locations, serving as an important link in the global metals supply chain for miners, processors, industrial consumers, and financial institutions.[3]
History[edit]
Gerald Group was founded in 1962 by Gerald Lennard as Gerald Metals in Connecticut, United States, beginning operations as a small copper trading company focused on base metals merchanting.[4] The company established itself in the metals trading industry during the 1960s and 1970s, building relationships with suppliers, customers, and financial institutions while expanding its commodity portfolio beyond copper to include aluminum, precious metals, and other non-ferrous metals.[5]
During the 1980s and 1990s, Gerald Group expanded internationally and diversified its operations across multiple continents. The company established trading offices in key global markets and developed expertise in structured finance, logistics, and risk management services, complementing its core trading business.[6] Gerald Group also owned a futures commission merchant, Gerald, Inc., with operations in Chicago and New York that was a clearing firm and member of the Chicago Board of Trade, Chicago Mercantile Exchange, NYMEX, and the exchange that later became the New York Board of Trade. The futures brokerage operations were sold to one of its customers in 1992 and renamed Rand Financial. The new firm was a subsidiary of Trout Trading Fund, the then $660 million commodity pool based in Bermuda and operated by the elusive Monroe Trout, a fan of author Ayn Rand.[7]
A significant transformation occurred in Gerald Group's corporate structure in 2017-2018 when the company underwent a comprehensive reorganization, establishing Gerald International Limited as its new United Kingdom holding company and relocating its global headquarters from Stamford, Connecticut to London.[8] This strategic move positioned the company closer to key growth markets in Africa and Asia while optimizing its organizational structure for enhanced financial reporting and transparency. The relocation was part of management's longstanding ambition to be better positioned for global operations and stakeholder relationships.[9] The Group operates trading hubs in Stamford, Shanghai, Geneva and Dubai.[10] Its main trading office is in Stamford, CT.
Gerald Group achieved significant financial milestones during the 2010s, completing its first revolving credit facility (RCF) in the company's history in 2011 and subsequently refinancing and expanding these facilities annually.[11] The company has maintained a track record of successful financing arrangements, including oversubscribed syndicated borrowing base facilities demonstrating strong lender confidence in its operations and growth prospects. In 2019, Gerald Group closed a US$300 million syndicated financing for its North American operations, followed by a US$450 million facility in 2021, both significantly oversubscribed by participating banks.[12]
Products and Services[edit]
Gerald Group operates as a comprehensive metals merchant providing integrated services across the global commodity value chain. The company's core business model centers on the sourcing, marketing, logistics, storage, hedging, risk management, and structured finance solutions for non-ferrous metals including aluminum, copper, tin, zinc, and cobalt; ferrous metals including iron ore and steel products; and precious metals including gold, silver, platinum, and palladium.[13] The company trades more than 5.5 million tonnes of metal annually with a global customer base spanning miners, processors, industrial consumers, and financial institutions across five continents.
Gerald Group's trading operations are complemented by derivatives trading capabilities, allowing the company to provide hedging and risk mitigation services to clients while managing its own exposure to commodity price volatility.[14] The company maintains significant physical infrastructure, including warehousing facilities, logistics networks, and strategic partnerships with transportation providers to facilitate the movement of commodities from producers to end users.
The company has developed specialized expertise in African markets, where it maintains strategic investments and offtake agreements across multiple mining jurisdictions. Gerald Group owns 90% of Marampa Mines Limited, which operates a high-grade iron ore mine in Sierra Leone, producing over 65% iron ore concentrate branded as "Marampa Blue."[15] The company also holds strategic investments in tin mining through its partnership with Alphamin Resources Corporation, which operates the Bisie Tin Project in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where Gerald Group serves as the exclusive offtaker of production.[16][17]
Gerald Group has implemented comprehensive sustainability initiatives aligned with global Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards. The company publishes annual sustainability reports detailing its approach to responsible sourcing, climate change mitigation, and social impact across its operations and supply chains. Gerald Group has established greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and reported a 74.4% reduction in Scopes 1-3 emissions and 42.9% reduction for Scopes 1-2 compared to its 2021 baseline. The company actively participates in industry associations, including the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative and implements responsible minerals sourcing policies aligned with OECD Due Diligence Guidance.[18]
